Globalizing Your Standards
Here are two sample standards that were modified to specifically include global competencies or 21st century skills:
1. Florida State Standard SC.912.N.1.1 Define a problem based on a specific body of knowledge and pose questions about the natural world, conduct systematic observations, examine books and other sources of information, analyze and interpret data, pose answers, explanations or descriptions of events, generate explanations, use appropriate evidence and reasoning to justify explanations, communicate your own research and evaluate the merits of the explanations produced by others.
Integration of Global Education
1. Students will use science to investigate the world by identifying issues and frame investigable questions of local, regional, or global significance.
2. Students will recognize and express their own perspective and explore other perspectives on an environmental issue.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications
1. Students will develop a case study of water pollution.
2. Students will compare and contrast case studies of water pollution.
3. Students will identify the major causes of water pollution around the world.
4. Students will analyze water pollution treatment and prevention plans.
Informal Outcome Assessment
2. Nextgen Science Standards HSLS4-5 Evaluate the evidence supporting claims that changes in environmental conditions may result in: (1) increases in the number of individuals of some species, (2) the emergence of new species over time, and (3) the extinction of other species.
Integration of Global Education
1. Students will investigate human impact on the environment and the resulting impact on other organisms.
2. Students will frame the impact of changing environmental conditions from the perspective of developed and developing nations.

Informal Outcome Assessment
- Students will create a presentation to share their water pollution case study which should include an overview of the geographic region/nation impacted, the factors leading to water pollution, the impact of water pollution on society, and any current efforts to address the water pollution.
- Students will crowd-source a google slides presentation to identify the major causes of water pollution around the world and to identify the most effective methods of prevention and treatment.

2. Students will frame the impact of changing environmental conditions from the perspective of developed and developing nations.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications
- Students will investigate global warming and its potential impact on sensitive ecosystems.
- Students will identify a specific organism that may be impacted by climate change and identify factors that would influence the likelihood of that organism evolving or going extinct.
- Students will identify how humans alter the environment and the consequences of those alterations on the biosphere.
Informal Outcome Assessment
- Students will create two “newscasts” on the impact of global warming, one from a western media perspective and one from the local regional media perspective.
- Students will create a flyer to communicate the impact of global warming on a particular organism in a particular ecosystem.
